This June, J River, along with his mom and others from the RGV, will be leading a workshop “Kids Making Zines” at the Allied Media Conference in Detroit. They’ll be discussing zines with a group of future and present alternative media making kids and making a zine in the three hour kids only workshop.

the camera i got arrived today, and its super awesome, (picture)! anyway, so we have some new ideas for the raffle.
-(in no particular order)prize #1, Art ‘zine starter kit–winner will recieve the poloroid camera, a cartraige of film, scissors, Sharpie, colored pencils, different textured colored paper
-prize #2, For the Writer in you—winner will recieve a typewriter (possibly antique), glue sticks, Sharpie, White out, different colored paper(nice effect when copied)
-prize# 3, ‘zine starter kit—patterned paper, glue sticks, Sharpie, White out, mini journals, pen and ink, & a nice decorated box to put it all in
-prize# 4, Stenciling kit— exacto knife + blades, transparencies, a can of spraypaint, sharpie, tape (great for mistakes :-])
-prize# 5, SIY-Sew It Yrself! ha— mini/portable sewing machine, fabric, patterns, sewing kit (usually includes needles, thread, thimbles, stringer thing, stuff like that)
-prize# 6, PIY! Print It Yrself, an alternative to screenprinting— exacto knife+blades, transparencies, sharpie, spray adhesive, tee shirt, good fabric for patches, scissors, acrylic paints
-prize # 7, Zine Pack— a sampling of different ‘zines from CS distro
-prize# 8, gift certificate— a $20 gift certificate from an online distro
of course these are tentative, depending on what we can get donated and what we can purchase ourselves. i’m super excited, i’ll probably be buying raffle tickets myself! a great idea, try getting a few extra tickets to try yr luck at winning multiple prizes, then give the other prize to a friend! it would make a marvelous gift ;-]

Noemi and I have been talking about how we can raise money to help with the expenses of us (her and I, plus the kids and possibly others) going allll the way up to detroit and have so far come up with these. ‘zine day/’zine-DIY fest
a day of workshops around ‘zines and ‘zine making. (a ‘zine is an small independent publication, can be about anything really). smaller, more intimate get-togethers can be held at our places of residence, while the ‘zine/DIY fest will be at STC. the RGV has never (at least to my knowledge) had an event like this, so i’m pretty excited about it. donations could be on a sliding scale basis.
media / education day
have 1/2 day long event with media-related workshops, like writing press releases, media advisories, even maybe organizing events and rallies and how to use media for our (our as in el pueblo) benefit… maybe with some music afterward or in between sessions, maybe even foooood ^____^ –the idea was to have at a local park but MEChA @ pan am is being so kind as to lend their status as a group to reserve space at UTPA!! sweet! donations could be on a sliding scale basis as well.

here we are documenting the various ways we are fundraising for our expenses going to this year’s Allied Media Conference. There is a growing group of activists, media makers, and children who will trek to Detroit from deep deep South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley.
Interesting that the wikipedia page doesn’t say that 3 RGV counties are listed in the top 25 poorest counties in the US and more than 5 in the top 60.
